SFA lobby for Euro expansion
|
The Scottish Football Association are to lobby Uefa to
expand the finals of the European Championship from 16 to 24 teams.
The Scots' bid to secure more places in the finals for smaller nations
echoes similar calls made by the Football Association of Ireland, and
the associations of Sweden and Latvia.
A Uefa spokesman confirmed: "There has been a request from the Scottish
FA backed by three other national associations to have the proposal put
on the agenda for the congress in January.
"The next stage would be for the congress to ask for a feasibility
study on it or to reject the proposal."
Uefa chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson has confirmed any changes to
the number of participants for future finals could even affect Euro 2012.
Meanwhile, Uefa have accepted Gibraltar as a provisional member of European
football, despite strong opposition from Spain, who dispute the sovereignty
of the British overseas territory.
A meeting of Uefa's executive committee in Nyon on Switzerland on Friday
decided they had to admit the Gibraltar Football Association following
a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
A final decision on Gibraltar's status will be made by the Uefa congress
next month.
