South Africa's government promises soccer fans will be safe
during the 2010 World Cup.
"We guarantee the safety and security of all the fans and teams that
will be participating in the 2010 soccer event,'' Deputy Finance Minister
Jabu Moleketi told the media in Pretoria on Wednesday.
About 30,000 police officers will be involved in tournament security,
of the 192,000 expected to be employed by 2009, Moleketi added.
They will have a 24-hour presence at all hotels, venues and routes used
by soccer fans.
Moleketi said also he was confident all stadium construction would be
completed by 2009, and some would be ready in 2008.
"Preparatory work has already began on the five stadiums and construction
work will begun in February next year. We have ample time to ensure that
everything is in place by 2010,'' he said.
The government has set aside 8.4 billion rands ($1.2 billion) for refurbishing
stadiums among 15 billion rands ($1.9 billion) for infrastructure development.
