Colombia and Brazil want to host 2014 World Cup
Colombia has joined Brazil in the bid to host the 2014 football World
Cup.
"We can confirm that Colombia has made official its interest for
the 2014 FIFA World Cup bid," a spokesperson of the ruling body FIFA
said here Tuesday.
Colombia had announced the previous day that it would bid against Brazil
for the tournament, meeting a Monday deadline by FIFA. Brazil submitted
its formal 'Expression of Interest' to FIFA last week.
"Brazil and Colombia are the two South American member associations
that formally expressed to FIFA their interest in hosting the 2014 World
Cup by the 18 December 2006 deadline," said FIFA in a statement.
Under the continental rotation scheme, only South American countries can
bid for the 2014 World Cup. The host national will be elected by the FIFA
executive committee in November 2007. The 2010 edition is in South Africa.
Colombia was elected to host the 1986 World Cup, but handed back the event
in 1982 because of financial problems. The tournament was then held in
Mexico.
Brazil is the most successful nation at the World Cup with five titles
and the only one to have played at all 18 editions. But the football-mad
country has only hosted the tournament only once in 1950.
