From Russia with love: Guus Hiddink says England
are better with Beckham
|
Russia coach Guus Hiddink rates England as favourites to
win their Euro 2008 qualifying group even if they are in fourth place.
Hiddink's team are a point ahead of England in third place, two points
behind Israel and Croatia who lead Group E.
But Hiddink said: "There are four competing for two positions but
I think from their past we cannot ignore England as favourites."
The Dutchman has been impressed by the way Beckham has made it impossible
for England manager Steve McClaren to ignore him.
"I think he did a good job," Hiddink told Five Live Sport.
"He was very professional when he announced he was going to the United
States then did his job in Real Madrid and regained his position in the
England team.
"You have to respect what he's achieved in the past month.
"If you see all of England's squad then with Beckham it's even better
but if you see England's potential then Beckham is extra."
Hiddink also dismissed the latest reports linking him with a move to the
Premiership and Manchester City.
He added: "I'm very happy working in Russia. We are in transition
- working with the infrastructure, modernising the stadiums and the youth
systems.
"As long as I feel in Russia ambition from their side, if they're
going to invest in the future, then I'm staying."
