Ralph Zloczower, Andreas Rickenbacher and Alexander
Tschappat unveil the Berne Countdown Clock (¿Philipp
Zinniker)
The last of the eight UEFA EURO 2008T Countdown Clocks
has been officially unveiled in Berne after local residents gave the green
light to their finals bid.
Official countdown
With 352 days, six hours and 45 minutes remaining before kick-off in the
first match of the finals, Berne mayor Alexander Tschappat, senior civil
servant Andreas Rickenbacher and Swiss Football Association president
Ralph Zloczower started the Swiss city's official countdown. Last week,
a local referendum approved the spending of ?3.4m of public money on staging
three games, building Fan Zones and other activities related to the finals.
Excitement begins
"The excitement of looking ahead to the EURO can now grow in Berne
as well," said Tschappat who was joined at the ceremony by Marcel
Brulhart, the city and canton of Berne's UEFA EURO 2008T co-ordinator.
The clock at the Zytglogge Tower in the centre of the historic city is
5.5m tall and weighs six tonnes. It was manufactured in a Swiss factory
near Thun, in the Berne region, and thus the final clock to be unveiled
had the shortest distance to travel to reach its final destination.
