2010 WORLD CUP ORGANISING COMMITTEE SUPPORTS PSL ON TV
RIGHTS
The 2010 World Cup local organising committee came out in support
of the South African Premier Soccer League's decision to award its TV
rights to pay-broadcaster SuperSport.
According to South African press reports, Tim Modise, chief communications
officer for the committee, said deals of this nature were an indication
of the growing interest in local soccer ahead of the World Cup.
'The PSL's R1,6 billion deal with SuperSport is a great move up from the
R500 million offered by the SABC earlier and something that I believe
is happening because of interest caused by the World Cup,' he said.
Modise said that the country would invest R21 billion in the World Cup,
which was expected to bring R51 billion into the economy.
'The key thing about the event is the kind of transformation SA will undergo,
as a people. Projects such as the Gautrain will revolutionise the way
we travel, and the tournament will increase confidence in the country.'
