Both Russia and England celebrated 3:0 victories over Macedonia
and Israel respectively and are now getting ready for their face-to-face
clash.
England are roundly tipped as the favourites of the coming match but Russia's
manager Guus Hiddink is convinced Russia won't fall easy meat to their
formidable opponents.
"Lots of my acquanitances keep saying that Enlgand will easily defeat
us but we will fight hard and try to surprise our opponents," said
Hiddink to Sport Express.
"I am glad we managed to beat Macedonia Saturday despite the problems
we had midway through the second half when Vyachselav Malafeev parried
a shot from the penalty spot."
"Ahead of Macedonia clash I said to the players that it is one matter
if you see red in an attempt to save your goal and it is quite a different
thing if you get sent off for silly things like arguing with the referee."
"The players paid attention and were disciplined on the pitch."
"We don't know yer whether we should take another keeper to England
with us now that Gabulov is suspended."
"I don't think there will be any visa problems so if we decide that
we need another goaltender just one hout can prove enough to settle the
matter."
"There is an opinion that it might do us good if I bring in Alexei
Smertin who plays in England and knows the manner of many English footballers."
"I must say that I respect this player and his devotion to the team
but we'have already formed a squad that have played a number of matches."
"Moreover I also try to think about the future."
"To get a spot at the Euro-2008 is our task now but there will be
other qualifying tournaments and we have to prepare players to take part
in them."
