Russian team completed Euro-2008 fixtures as Spain reserved final berth
with outblasting 3-0 victory.
Luis Aragones's men proved too strong for Russian side as
they repeated their Group D victory that sent them to Euro-2008 final
against Germany.
Vasili Berezutsky who replaced suspended Denis Kolodin in the starting
line-up denied Fernando Torres's attempt on goal, while Spanish players
tested Igor Akinfeev forcing him into saves in the first half of the game.
The hat-trick hero of the first meeting between the teams at group stage
David Villa was soon limped off eleven minutes before going to the lockers,
while Russia's Roman Pavlyuchenko tested Iker Casillas.
The second half proved to be crucial as Spain turned to be too strong
for Russian men to beat.
Xavi Hernandes, Daniel Guiza and Davis Silva sent their team 3-0 ahead
leaving almost no chances for Russia to fight back.
Spain set up a final meeting with Germany, while Russia is satisfied with
the bronze.
"We were beaten by a very strong opponent", said Guus Hiddink
after the semifinal game.
"Spaniards deserve this victory after they showed impressive football
in the second half of the match."
"At the same time I would like to underline that our players fought
with them as equals during an hour."
"Unfortunately they made too many mistakes, which become crucial
at such major event."
"I think we can be proud of what we have done. The third place is
a wonderful result."
