Arsenal had been strongly linked with the Zenit St. Petersburg
star, who led his club to glory in last season's UEFA Cup, although Arsene
Wenger's recent queries in the press over Arshavin's suitability to the
Premier League seemed to have dampened that possibility.
However, reports indicate the Gunners' local rivals are preparing to swoop
in with an ?18million bid for the 27-year-old, despite Zenit being recently
locked in negotiations with Barcelona.
Camp Nou is Arshavin's preferred destination, as he has expressed his
desire to play Champions League football and is a long-time supporter
of the Catalan club.
But talks between Barca and Zenit have stalled as the Russian club are
demanding in the region of ?20million for their star forward, whose stock
has risen remarkably after steering his country to the semi-finals of
EURO 2008.
Hence, Spurs boss Juande Ramos could well walk in unopposed to add the
St. Petersburg native to his ever-expansing list of creative talents at
White Hart Lane.
The Spaniard has already brought in Croatian midfielder Luka Modric and
Mexican magician Giovani dos Santos - which, when added to his January
signings, brings his outlay so far this year to around ?50million.
Thus, it is almost certain Dimitar Berbatov will have to be sold to fund
any potential move for Arshavin, Manchester United having reportedly lodged
a ?20million bid for the Bulgarian hitman in the last few days.
