Reports in the Spanish media claim that Brazil are on standby to host
the 2010 World Cup.
Sports daily AS claims: "The South American country,
which was chosen to organise the World Cup in 2014, has become the first
option if South Africa is not able to organise the 2010 edition".
The newspaper also revealed that football's governing body has told South
Africa of this decision.
"FIFA has informed the South African government of its decision to
consult the (Brazilian Football Federation) on the possibility of organising
the next two tournaments," it continued.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter raised eyebrows when he told the press that
a contingency plan was in place should South Africa fail to meet the required
deadlines to host the showpiece.
However, the African nation remains confident that it will allay FIFA's
concerns and host a successful tournament.
