FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2010
World Cup have announced that 20 000 tickets will be made available, free
of charge, to workers at the various stadia around the country. LOC head
Danny Jordaan says the workers are an integral part of the success of
the World Cup and the Confederations Cup next year.
Each worker will be given two free tickets to a match at the stadium at
which they worked. Yesterday, the Board of the LOC announced that the
cheapest tickets would be on sale at R140 for South Africans, regardless
of the currency exchange rate in two year's time.
FIFA and the board of the 2010 Local Organising Committee agreed to fix
the rand dollar exchange rate for the lowest grade tickets. These tickets
will sell for $20 and the rate will remain at R7 to the dollar.
Committee chairperson Irvin Khoza said 'One of the motivating factors
was to make sure that we protect the SA residents. You must understand
that the building of the stadia comes out of the taxpayers' money so it's
very important that we make the price reasonable for the people of this
country...'
