Zenit midfielder Roman Shirokov answered Sport Express
questions. The Russian national team recruit had a successful season,
as he moved to one of Russia's best clubs and won Euro-2008 bronze medals.
Meanwhile Roma claims he is not satisfied with his current state in the
team, since he wants to have more practice.
"It's natural that Zenit performance could be assessed from two different
points of view", said Shirokov to Sport Express. "On one hand
the start of the season was very optimistic for us, as we sealed two Eurocups,
but on the other hand our performance in the Russian Premier League was
a real failure, because we finished the title race only on the fifth place".
"Zenit could have been even the eighth, and it would be a catastrophe"!
"My personal display was ambiguous too. The first half of the season
was very successful, but after Euro-2008 everything went wrong".
"My current state in the team doesn't satisfy me, because I want
to see more playing practice. It's very hard to show yourself when you
enter the match for several minutes. But if you take a look to statistics,
you will see that even when I came as a substitution for more than 30
minutes, I always scored or added an assist. I don't want to sit on the
bench and earn money for it, even in Zenit".
"The club bosses say that I shouldn't wait for serious changes in
future. Though it's up to the head coach to decide who deserves playing
practice, while we didn't discuss this issue with him".
"I am satisfied with everything in Zenit, I like the team, head coach,
training process, the city and our supporters. However I don't want to
sit on the bench".
"I think that coming match with Real Madrid will be special for several
players, for example for those who want to take leave of Zenit. They will
have a perfect opportunity to demonstrate their best skills in away match
with the Spanish football grand. Though it will be important for other
players too, as everybody wants to show themselves in European competition".
