Andrei Arshavin now appears certain to leave Zenit St.
Petersburg after he was recently granted the right to enter discussions
with his suitors.
"We gave Arshavin permission to negotiate directly with other clubs,"
Zenit general manager Maxim Mitrofanov said in The Sun.
"Usually a player who has a running contract with a team isn't allowed
to do it. But Zenit are prepared to consider any offers for Arshavin."
It is a curious back-flip from a club who in the summer seemed determined
to frustrate any and all attempts to sign their star forward.
Tottenham Hotspur were eager to add the EURO 2008 star to their squad,
but the Russian club raised their asking price to over ?25 million.
But now Arshavin has made it plain he no longer wishes to play for his
hometown club, and he is hoping that the giants of either the Primera
Division or the Premier League will take notice in January.
"I still have a desire to play abroad and I'd like to play either
in Spain or England," the 27-year-old said.
"Barcelona are my favourite team and in England there is Manchester
United and Chelsea."
Barca and Real Madrid were both strongly linked with Arshavin during the
summer, as were the Blues of Stamford Bridge. Sir Alex Ferguson, however,
already has more attackers than he knows what to do with - thus, Old Trafford
looks an unlikely destination.
