Zenit playmaker, who has been voted the best footballer
of Russia in 2007, Konstantin Zyryanov promised to talk to Sport Express
at the end of the season and he kept his word.
"I will always remember this spring with a special affection, as
Zenit won UEFA Cup trophy", said Zyryanov. "I understood that
nothing would keep us from winning this title after semifinals against
Bayern, since we were to play only one game - the final one".
"I thought about the Super Cup for the first time after our final
match in Manchester. We watched the Champions League final, which was
to determine our opponent, at Luzhniki stadium. We have already joined
the national team preparations and we got an opportunity to visit the
match between Manchester United and Chelsea".
"I was watching them playing and I thought it would be better to
play against Chelsea in the Super Cup, but when they were headed by Scolari,
I changed my mind".
"I was very happy that Russian national team grabbed bronze medals
at the summer continental showdown. Today I can say that I believed that
Russia would reach Euro semifinals, but I won't lie. I didn't believe
in our success".
"Pavel Pogrebnyak was sidelined from the European competition through
an injury, and we were worried about him. This player has gone through
the whole UEFA Cup journey with Zenit, but didn't manage to take part
in the final through suspension. He was the first-choice candidate to
the national team, but finally had to leave it".
"I was very upset for him, but was happy when he scored in the Super
Cup against Manchester United".
"As for my personal performance, I know that there are stronger players
in the Russian Premier League. If the club is not going to part with me,
I will surely stay in St. Petersburg".
"I played around 60 official matches this season, and it seems to
me that it's maximum number of games, which can be played in one season".
"And finally I want to congratulate Sport Express readers with Happy
New Year and wish them all the best".
