"In the last game of the season against Tottenham (2:2)
the team showed two completely different halves," said Karpin. "There
were two reasons."
"Firstly, the players were tired and probably the fatigue of the
whole season told on the second half. And the second reason is that Tottenham
put some ginger into their play."
"In football the result determines everything. That means that Laudrup
having so many young players on the field was not quite right, for we
did not manage to keep the necessary difference. So some can say that
it was not right and others should have started the game, but if the game
finished with 2:0 everybody would say that it was the right decision."
"But if in the second half the experienced players were on the field
and the English equalized people would start saying that it would have
been better to give a chance to the young. So it is always to argue after
the game than make decisions during it."
"In general the year for Spartak was a failure. And unfortunately
the period with Laudrup and me was not an exception."
"But Spartak goes ahead though it cannot be seen on the scoreboard.
First of all the head coach understood what he wants from every single
player and the players know Laudrup's requirements."
"If Cherchesov stayed in Spartak no one would see what the players
really could, and the club probably could have ended on the fifth line.
But we want to play the way Spartak should - in attack."
"I think that at the moment only the goalie Stipe Pletikosa meets
the demands of Spartak of the 1990s."
"We have purchased one young player - 19-year old Brazilian Rafael
Carioca, but the others will be experienced footballers. We have no age
limit; everything depends on the level of the player. Sometimes it is
possible to play well at 32."
"Unfortunately we have no players able to become the core of the
team. Of course there are old hands like Bystrov or Pavlenko. But I do
not know whether they are ready to head the team. Earlier there used to
be leaders like Titov, Boyarintsev or Mozart. Some of them left and Mozart
lost his status after he played for the reserves."
"Spartak needs to return lost positions in the Russian championship
and only then we can speak about European Cups. Next year we can get into
the UEFA Cup only through the Russian Cup and that is why it is very important
for us."
"I believe that the season-2009 will be better for Spartak than this
one. I can give no guarantees but I am sure we will fight for the first
place in the regular championship."
"For the coming New Year I wish everybody: the team, its management
and supporters to see the returning of Spartak that wish to win and fight
in every particular match."
