Sport Express journalists and experts have voted
Russian star forward Andrei Arshavin as the best athlete of the year in
Russia. Zenit recruit got 215 points to finish atop of the standings and
leave behind Olympic champion Elena Isinbaeva (212 points) and Alexandr
Ovechkin (138 points).
"To my mind hockey players would better win this title, because they
clinched the World championship trophy after a long break", said
Arshavin to Sport Express. "As for my rivalry with Isinbaeva, she
doesn't have any worthy challengers in pole vaulting. This discipline
appeared not long ago, and Russian Olympic champion takes the lead over
her challengers".
"Any kind of voting reflects opinion of some group of people, so
you should treat these things calmly. If I have an opportunity to vote,
I would name Alexandr Ovechkin as the best athlete of the year in Russia.
He was leader of our hockey team at the World championship in Canada".
"This year game lots of different feelings. I disabused myself of
error and understood that nobody will be worried about myself except my
family and me. My relations with many people have changed and not to better
side. I changed my agent this year, and I think Bystrov, Anyukov and Denisov
didn't like it very much".
"I believe that Deku and Ibrahimovic are the best players among those,
who played against me, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are the most
gifted in the world football. I was playing only against Ronaldo, but
at that time his father died and Cristiano didn't show his best and we
drew that game against Portugal 0-0".
"Ibragimovic also shined at Euro-2008, but I mentioned his play when
we played against Sweden in Moscow (1-1)".
"When I make plans for future, they never come true, but my wishes
to all Russia fans are sincere. Read Sport Express newspaper, love sport
and enjoy your life!"
