Stuttgart vs. Zenit - 1:2 (0:1)
The inspirational captain of Zenit Anatoly Tymoschuk was suspended for
the yesterday's match and lacking the leader Zenit could have had problems
but they have none.
At the 13th minute of the match St. Petersburg showed their ability to
counterattack dangerously with Jens Lehmann saving the goal of the hosts
from a left-footed strike of the midfielder of the Russian national team
Konstantin Zyryanov.
Stuttgart tried their best, created many scoring chances, hit the post
but everything in vain. And that proved to be costly as Zenit's newcomer
Igor Semshov scored from inside the box after a cross from the Portuguese
Danny putting the Dick Advocaat's side ahead.
On the tenth minute of the second half the guests showed that they are
ready for everything for the sake of the necessary result.
Konstantin Zyryanov was knocked down on the opponent's side of the field
and kept lying on the grass. Pogrebnyak kicked the ball out but the hosts
decided to ignore the fair play principle and not to return the ball to
the guests.
Marcus Babbel made a double substitution giving the chance to Gebhart
and Elson to improve the situation. The first sub proved useful in the
long run.
In the second half Germans equalized with Timo Gebhart darting into the
area and beating Vyacheslav Malafeev. German hopes were scuttled six minutes
after when the sub Viktor Fayzulin darted the ball into the empty net
with the goalie already beaten.
Zenit thus defended their title of the UEFA Cup holders and German clubs
beaters, winning the third Bundesliga club for a year. The next opponent
of the Russian club in the Round of 16 is Udinese that passed over Lech.
