"I had a very hard work during the off-season,"
said Karpin. "I flew very much from country to country."
"It is true that foreign footballers are not eager to come to Russia.
Of course I knew about it but did not think that the problem is so significant."
"The reasons for this are quite clear: our country is not very attractive
for Europeans and they do not give much coverage to the Russian football
though of rather high level in Europe."
"And sometimes I did not understand the reason of some rejections.
Players either asked for very big money or preferred to be always on the
bench there than play on a high level here in Russia."
"After the first match of the Premier League I was upset with the
result - for we did not win. We had problems in the game without ball.
First of all I mean tackling and pressing."
"Moreover we looked rather good against the current UEFA Cup holder
that already had several games this season. We had dangerous moments and
we created these moments ourselves - that is good."
"To tell the truth everybody worried before the game. You know we
did so much for the team. Just imagine what our disappointment would be
if in the starting match of the season we looked as commonplace as we
did last year."
"Fortunately nothing of the kind happened but it is not time for
any conclusions yet. All major trials are still ahead."
"Recently the desire to become a coach came to may head though earlier
I never thought of this. But at the moment it is just an abstract idea
that is connected neither with Spartak nor any other club."
"We had to enlist Mozart though it is evident he won't appear on
the field. According to the FIFA regulations if you do not put him into
the application form the club must pay the player the whole sum of his
salary till the end of the contract."
"We were ready to let him play in some other club in Torino for example
on very beneficial conditions for the footballer. But because of the crisis
not all the clubs can afford Mozart's salary."
