On Wednesday Spartak managers fired the head coach Michael
Laudrup following the team's poor start to the season and their elimination
from the Russian Cup tourney. Yesterday Spartak general director and the
team caretaker Valery Karpin gave an interview to Sport Express about
the current state of things in the club.
"First of all the team's poor results influenced our decision to
part with the Danish specialist", said Karpin. "Spartak suffered
a painful 1:3 loss to FC Moskva in the Russian Premier League fixture.
And then our catastrophic failure in the Russian Cup from Dynamo 0:3 deprived
us of the only one chance to advance to the UEFA Cup. Altogether these
factors changed the situation completely".
"Decision to sack Laudrup was very hard to accept for everyone and
especially for me, as a person who invited this coach to the team. I am
ready to bear responsibility for everything, because I will work as the
team general director and the coach".
"Our talk with Spartak shareholders started before our match with
Dynamo and continued at Luzhniki. I gave a suggestion to part with our
head coach at the meeting of board of directors and it took us not much
time to make the final decision".
"Laudrup accepted the news very calmly and said "Ok". Our
talk took us a couple of minutes and was easier than our talk with the
previous coach Stanislav Cherchesov".
"Besides Laudrup his assistant Erick Larsen has also been dismissed
from his work. All other coaches keep their positions in the team".
"It's difficult to say who proposed to impose responsibility for
the team's results and training process on me. It was me who invited Laurdup
to Spartak and I felt that everybody considered me to be in charge for
the way the team played in defence and attack, though I didn't take part
in the trainings".
"Moreover the process of searching for a replacement will take us
too much time. He will need to get acquainted with players, know their
capabilities and understand the team playing style. As the result we could
have lost one more season like it happened last year. But I am not ready
for it".
"So there were no possible candidatures except me and I am ready
to take charge for the club. Our results will determine the time which
I will head the team".
"To my mind the problem of getting the license of Pro category is
not the most important now. I am allowed to stay on the bench during the
games, and I think nobody is concerned who manages the training process".
"Now I am focused on the Saturday match against Terek, after which
we will have a week to start searching for a new head coach".
"I limited players' talks with mass media. The situation in the team
is not easy and any communications with the press could harm our preparations
for the match with Terek".
