Russian national team
coach Guus Hiddink has urged Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko
to follow the example of Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin and prove his quality
to his club.
National team boss Guus Hiddink told Russian newspaper Express Sport that
he hopes Pavlyuchenko can learn from the Arshavin's professionalism and
work-rate.
"Generally, Arshavin can't be stopped; he is proactive and always
wants to improve,' said the former Chelsea boss. ''Pavlo' is a little
different. He knows that I like him very much, but I always say to Roman
that he should not succumb to his inherent tendencies of complacency.'
Hiddink has urged the striker to resurrect his form from last summer's
European Championship, warning the Spurs man that his place is the national
side is not safe.
"At Euro 2008 he was as sharp as a dagger,' Hiddink explained. 'In
those matches he won universal respect. If he wants to be successful in
his career, he must maintain this approach."
Pavlyuchenko has been linked with a move to Italian side Roma and Hiddink
believes that if the player wishes to save his Tottenham career, learning
English is the key.
"I think he still needs to improve [his English] - all the more because
the other day I read [Tottenham manager] Harry Redknapp had said it would
be better if Roman spoke in English,' the Dutchman asserted.
"With Arshavin we have spoken a few times on the phone and I would
say that his colloquial English is already perfect. On the phone you can
only count on your vocabulary - gesturing is no good - and Arshavin copes
with this perfectly."
Pavlyuchenko is a favourite at White Hart Lane and Hiddink's words may
shake him into some form.
