The Russian Sports Minister Vitaliy Mutko stepped down as
the president of the Russian Football Union yesterday. Mutko's top deputy
Nikita Simonyan will serve as interim chief until February 3, when the
new president will be elected at the extraordinary meeting of the union.
Right after yesterday's meeting of the RFU executive committee Vitaliy
Mutko answered journalists' questions.
"The President Dmitriy Medvedev recently announced that all sports
federations must be run by full-time professionals and presidents of sports
federations leave their posts nowadays", said Mutko. "It concerned
eleven federations out of 128 in our country as their presidents stepped
down from their posts".
"The extraordinary meeting will be held on February 3 instead of
April, and I am going to back candidature of the federation's interim
chief Nikita Simonyan".
"Members of executive committee asked me whether I thought about
leaving the post of the minister and stay the RFU president. I love football
very much and I am faithful to this sport, and that is why I will keep
an eye on it in future".
"Prior to the match with Germany we made a new offer to the Russian
national team's head coach Guus Hiddink".
"On our way back from Maribor we agreed that Guus would make his
decision on his future in our team as soon as possible. We also agreed
to meet before the end of the year and make the final decision, because
we will need to plan the training camp in February, possible opponents
for friendly games and other vital issues".
"We are linked with Guus Hiddink by acting contract and we are waiting
for his decision".
