Arsene Wenger has lauded the influence of Russian international
Andrey Arshavin as the diminutive midfielder approaches the end of his
first year in England.
The 28-year-old has lit up the Premier League with several sterling performances,
both this season and last, notching spectacular goals at Anfield, Old
Trafford and regularly at the Emirates.
Deployed in recent months as a makeshift centre-forward and carrying a
slight injury, Arsenal's record signing has still maintained his decisive
output alongside captain Cesc Fabregas helping the Gunners with their
title challenge.
Speaking about Arshavin, Wenger stressed this morning:
"I'm very happy with Arshavin, in every big game he is influential.
"He creates the chances. When you look at him he turns up when it is really
needed. Not at 4-0 but at 0-0. He is a player you can rely on.
"He likes the big stage and he knows that he can be quiet for 20 minutes
and turn up with something decisive. The big players help you win the
game.
"He is always marked very tight and people don't give a lot of him freedom.
"Even when he is marked tight in so-called less big games...he's still
always produces something special."
Arshavin looks likely to once again spearhead the Arsenal attack this
weekend as Arsene Wenger's side host Manchester United at the Emirates.
With Eduardo da Silva out injured for the next week and Nicklas Bendtner
lacking match fitness the Russian could well be joined by Samir Nasri
and Tomas Rosicky.
