WHY WOLVES IS SPECIAL FOR BILLY
by Matthew Gamble
This weekend's visit of Wolves evokes special memories for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.
It's almost a year since the Russian winger signed for Everton and he
scored his first goal for the Club against this weekend's opponents.
The ex-Lokomotiv Moscow man went on to net seven times last season, notching
particularly eye-catching strikes against Manchester United and Portsmouth.
But he freely admits that his first Toffees goal remains extra-special.
"I am looking forward to the game because it is the start of our
season at Goodison Park," Bilyaletdinov told evertontv.
"We lost the last game at Blackburn so it is very important we get
three points."
Bilyaletdinov's late intervention against Wolves in last season's game
secured a point for Everton on a frustrating afternoon which the Blues
dominated before Kevin Doyle struck in the second half.
"I remember this well," the Russian confirmed. "There were
five minutes to go and I scored the goal. There was a big noise in the
stadium after I scored and I think it is the best feeling when you score
and see the happy faces in the stands.
"But I want to score more goals and see more happy faces.
"Every player likes to score goals but the important thing is getting
the result for the team. That is why the supporters come to the games."
Billy's left foot was the architect for much of Everton's good work last
season and he is hoping to help the team to a higher position this time
around following the last campaign's eighth-place finish.
He added: "We have big plans for this season and we want to go back
to the top of the table. This year we need to not lose at home and get
more wins away. We need to start by beating Wolves."
