"If you want to know what a many feels returning to
the national team after a two-year break I can tell you," said Shirokov.
"I am very happy. I always wanted to return to the national team
so what other feelings I can possibly have."
"Globally during these two years I kept thinking about the national
team but almost the half of this time I did not play so returning was
out of the question. And only this season the matter became relevant again.
Spalletti came to Zenit and began to trust me more."
"I have a feeling that I have returned to my native home - guys are
the same that were at Euro-2008 and the atmosphere has not changed."
"I have not found anything new in the national team, of course the
head coach - but I got used to him in the club."
"As everything is past already I can speak about my feelings when
I got into Guus Hiddink's disfavour. It was rather natural when I did
not appear in Zenit. But the first times after the European Championship
left some strange impression."
"That time Korneev called me and said that the coaching staff was
not satisfied with my physical conditions but it was only a lame excuse."
"The fact that there are many Zenit men in the national team does
not help a lot only in terms of good cooperation on the field. As for
the atmosphere in the team I know it well - the relations with the fellows
are good."
"And I do not fear that the presence of many Zenit players can influence
the psychological condition of the team. Of course it was a hard blow
for the entire team that we stumbled out of the Champions League but we
cannot worry forever - otherwise you will be followed by a succession
of ill luck."
"I think that we have recovered from this stress and now we have
to win the Russian Championship and advance past the Europa League group
stage."
