The forward of Arsenal and the captain of the Russian national
team Andrey Arshavin was named best player of Russia and CIS countries
in August getting 46,2% of the votes with the runner-up Artyom Dzyuba
having 25,5%.
Zvezda award winners: January - Pavel Pogrebnyak. February - Roman Pavlyuchenko.
March - Igor Akinfeev. April - Oleksandr Aliyev. May - Oleksandr Aliyev.
July - Andriy Shevchenko.
"I am very much surprised that you start the conversation saying
that I won Zvezda Award in August," said Arshavin. "I thought
this all was about the Euro-2012 qualifiers."
"If I became number one last month that means that there were no
other significant events. Of course I scored two goals in the three starting
matches but that is not enough to win month's award."
"Though I cannot name other candidate myself. The Russian internationals
have hardly appeared on the pitch and I had no time to watch the Russian
Championship."
"Talking about the coming match against Andorra I have the following
associations: suspension and dwarf. Even after some years that episode
with my sending off will never become funny. It remains one of the saddest
in my career. I rarely got suspensions in big football and I remember
all of the cases."
"If Andorrans keep playing the way they did last time (and I see
no reasons why they should change) they can make anybody flare up. But
I have certain experience of this kind and I hope it will help me not
to get to the same trap twice."
"Well, three years ago I was also ready to all these pushes and grips
but the spirits were low after the loss to Israel and it was harder to
control oneself."
"The year and a half in England have significantly changed me - I
became calmer, more professional and spend more time with my family."
"As for my football I can say that my style has also altered - it
is more effective but less picturesque. I do not remember when was the
last time I score a really beautiful goal."
"It is difficult to estimate the preparation of our team to the new
qualifying cycle - the game will show it. Judging from the match against
Bulgaria our readiness is naught - it is obviously not the level that
our players can show. But I hope that match was not illustrative."
